Kenneth Woodworth

Kenneth Woodworth is an award-winning colored pencil artist and has been honing his talents for over 40 years. Ken began drawing in childhood and hasn’t stopped since.  Graphite pencil and colored pencils are his tools of the trade. Ken specializes in fine detail and surreal images.

Ken has won many, many awards for his drawings, and has had his work at the Haggin Musuem, public television 3 years consecutively and the California State Fair, to name a few.  Most recently, Ken’s work was accepted into the Colored Pencil Society of America’s International Exhibition in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ken’s Artist Statement:

I have been a pencil artist for over 40 years. Pencils are one of the few mediums that require such an attention to detail and precision. The width of a pencil, when sharpened, is but a small point. I use that small point to cover the paper canvas not once, or even twice. Each of my paintings contains at least four layers of colored pencil. Some paintings require many more layers. Working in this fashion requires every square inch of my work to be premeditated. As a result, the color is rich and the detail is very fine.

My compositions are about story telling through symbolism. In my drawings, I hide things that someone would never notice unless I told them about it. I imply mood with color and place objects where they are not normally associated. At times, I spend months working out a composition, creating studies of light and shadow. The composition must be completely worked out before I lay pencil to paper for a final draft. The evolution of each piece is a personal journey.
